HMO Challenge 2013!

James takes, and fails, the HMO Shopping Challenge.
James takes, and fails, the HMO Shopping Challenge.

It’s a New Year and a new Heavy Metal Overlord (not, like, an actual new Heavy Metal Overlord… I’ve not been usurped or anything) and I’m going to start 2013 with a challenge!

One of my goals when I started HMO was to be more particular about the music I buy. To an extent, this has been fairly successful! 2012 was a great year in my ears. I spent slightly less money than usual and concentrated my spending on the purchases that excited me the most!

But there’s always room for improvement. In 2012 I kept track of EVERY album I bought and how much I was spending. In light of this information, I’ve decided to revamp my How Tempting posts, my Buying Round-Ups and set myself a goal.

Based on 2012’s spending I’m going to be setting myself a monthly budget. It will be, at the most, 50% of what I spent that month in 2012 – less if the previous year’s spending was totally off the hook!

I’ll kick off each month with a How Tempting post. I’ll disclose my monthly budget and evaluate the merits of any music that’s tempting me at that point. At the end of the month a Buying Round-Up will announce my purchases and disclose my spending. As usual, there will be running totals a-go-go.

I’d love you all to chip in. Let me know what you think I should be buying, let me know if there is anything out there I might have missed and let me know if the stuff I’ve bought sucks. And please let me know if you have set yourself any music-related challenges for 2013. We’re in this together!

HMO Challenge Rules:

  • The monthly total will include: all CDs, vinyl, downloads and box sets I buy.
  • However, only singles that cost me more than £2 will be included. The Single of the Week series continues!
  • Music DVDs, but not any other DVDs, will be included.
  • No book purchases will be included, even if they are music-related.
  • Until an album purchase is disclosed, it will not appear in my Noise-some Notes. To regular readers, these posts may seem shorter than usual.

  1. Your rules make sense. I look forward to seeing how you do. I couldn’t cut my spending in half by 50% though. That’s an ambitious amount.

My only challenge in 2013 is moving to a bigger place, and keeping my music collection on display. Nothing in boxes. At this point, in my current place, I have to start putting my soundtracks in a box.

    1. My collection hasn’t been on display for about 5 years. That’s ok though, no-one is allowed to look at or touch it anyway! Haha only joking.

A 50% cut is extremely ambitious… I’m under no illusions. It’s going to be tough and it’s going to be painful. I might fail dramatically! But it’ll hopefully make for good reading in any case… and I’m going to give it my best shot. I’m pretty excited about it.

      1. This is sort of a combination challenge/new year’s resolution. I wish you the best of luck! But I offer you one piece of advice:

If something happens by that you may never see again, jump at it.

I blew my chance to own a copy of Kiss, Chikara. A decision I regret, 15 years later.

      2. And 2012’s New Year’s resolution was to keep a log of all the stuff I buy/listen to! So it feels like I’ve started a chain reaction…

That advice is crucial though! I think I’ll hold off buying anything until each month is nearly through. That way if I see a once in a lifetime item I won’t feel so bad.

The worst part is… a lot of the things I really want at the moment are box sets! Aaarrghh

      3. That Thin Lizzy BBC box set is very, very high on my list. I don’t think the Canadian Amazon site ever even got it. If they did, they didn’t have it for long.

If you see it in your travels, I will happily reimburse you.

      4. Yes it certainly is! However the asking price of some of these discs only seems to be going up, so I guess if I wanted to cash out, I could probably end up making money. Rich Kamerer has certainly done that with some of his purchases.

      5. I remember one time, T-Rev came in and said, “If you ever see a Primus album called The Brown Album, I want it.” It was brand new at the time. It suddenly came in later that day! Magic?

      6. Another good tip might be to limit your trips to the cheap shops. Each visit just increases temptation. I know you’re like me, can’t go into one of those places without finding ten things (minimum) that want to come home with you.

  2. Haha you are CHOOSING to do what I had thrust upon me last July! When we went to one income, so I could stay home with the kids, the amount of funds available for music was cut down significantly. I’m not complaining, I’m just saying. And I can inform you: it’s easier than you think. Being selective about what you buy will ultimately make you happier with your collection.

I would count all things music-related in this. Books too. But that’s just me, keeping things all together.

I’d also count your singles, even at 50p. You won’t have an accurate toal if you skip the little things. The little things add up, you know.

That picture of James cracks me up. But it’s Trujillo in the background, smiling at the ladies, that really slays me. And James couldn’t care less.

Looking forward to your series!! This is cool stuff. Good luck!

Hopefully! That’s the idea. I wouldn’t want people to think I’m doing this because I love music less… quite the opposite!

I think it’ll just be tidier to leave that stuff out. Since starting the blog I’ve bought a lot less books and DVDs anyway. Albums are always the priority and if I’m spending less on them I can’t see me buying that many DVDs or books. If there is anything particularly expensive though I might mention it and adjust the budget accordingly!

I’m gonna just treat those as a necessary blog expense! If doing the series costs me £2 a week, that’s fine. I’ll buy one less coffee! I don’t want to put myself off doing the Singles series by worrying about the cost. If I’ve hit the budget at the end of year I’ll have saved a TON of money.

I love that picture too… Bargains! Imprisoning me! All that I see! Absolute savings! Hahahah

Oh we wouldn’t have believed you were losing interest, never fear!

Fair enough. I’m just all or nothing, I guess! 😉

That’s AWESOME! Well done. Looking at it again, I might instead caption Trujillo as “dat ass!”

  3. haha! you are spending a lot of money on albums and I am spending on concerts… I don’t even want to count how much money I spent for concerts last year… it’s for sure a lot! This year I don’t think there will be so many concerts in the area I live in… so there is some hope to save my budget 😉

    1. I already made the difficult decision to cut out concerts in favour of buying albums! I’ll only buy gig tickets now if it’s a band I’ve never seen or one I’m particularly excited about. I do miss them though…

Still time for more gigs to be announced though! Have you got anything exciting coming up?

      1. I’m in the UK unfortunately so the US site won’t let me buy Amazon downloads (tried before as there is often stuff available there that you can’t get here).

I’m more into buying the physical albums too, to be honest. But I can be tempted by downloads if the price is right! And there’s some great bargains there by the looks of it.

        Thanks for the info!

  4. My answer is that I Spotify everything I want to listen to first – and buy the stuff I really love. It allows me to listen to a wide variety of stuff risk free and save my cash for what I really want to spend it on. Just what works for me…

    1. Great advice. I should definitely use services like that more but I just always forget they are there. I have this compulsion to want to own the physical album. And there’s no good reason for that, that I could explain anyway! I’m sure if I’m buying less I’ll want to use Spotify more.

  5. Man, talk about aman with a plan – now I get it a bit more! I really don’t know how you do it…so tempting to collect and complete current collections…so much to obtain and sooooo little time! Maybe I should start pimping my neighbours (and their pets) to raise extra funds to work on the overall picture?

    1. Marco the life of a collector is not a cheap one! I am still trying to get one more Iron Maiden release but I don’t have the $300 needed to buy the Best of the Beast box! And that would basically complete my collection.

      1. Ah is that the box set in the shape of Eddie’s head that contains the remastered disks with videos and CDRom extras? Tell me about it – and my space is so limited here I literally have to most treasures, grrr

      2. No this is a 4 LP box set from 1996. The reason I need it is an exclusive version of Revelations, plus the entire Sound house Tapes. That’s it, that is all I need. I have everything else. I have pics of my entire Maiden collection on my site in the Maiden reviews. Singles, imports, box sets, everything that I have.

  6. Ha, that is such a cool idea. I’ve been planning on setting myself “stop buying so much music” style challenges. Probably mine was going to be in month long abstinances. Really cool to read someone else at it.

    1. Thanks! I thought it was a good plan… starting to regret now a bit! Haha

I think next year I’ll try a few mini-challenges! I feel like I should be able to go a whole month without buying anything but it’s really difficult… and I can’t remember the last time I went a whole month and didn’t buy anything.

I’ve been enjoying your site a lot too! Great combination of Prog and Metal reviews there. I’m a big Crimson fan too so I’ll be sure to be look back over all your reviews.
