Morbid Angel – Altars of Madness

One of the early genre-defining releases of Death Metal and also a benchmark in the great Metal tradition of trying to sound more evil than everyone else! On top of the phenomenal musicianship they also had a great vocalist in David Vincent. One of the few guttural vocalists that still manages to allow the lyrics to come through. So you can clearly make out lyrics such as:

“Ia iak sakkakh ia sakkakth
Ia shaxul
Ia kingu ia cthulu ia azbul
Ia azabua”*

Great. Thanks for that David. As Alan Partridge would say: a gibberish classic!

  1. Those gutteral singers crack me up. “Grarr I am from the pits of hell Rraaarrggghh!” Hahaha. OK boys, I’m sure your mom is proud of you. Anyway, that is some seriously cool cover art. And I notice definite Lovecraft in the lyrics. Cthulu! Chtulu! Whatever you do, don’t go in the basement, HMO. Seriously, going down to the cellar to see what’s going on never, EVER works out for people in his stories.

    1. Well, luckily HMO Mission Control doesn’t have a cellar. We do, however, have a network of tunnels filled with all sorts of eldritch entities. In fact Yog-Sothoth is having a cup of tea with me right now while we watch Michael Mann’s “Collateral” together. Pass the Tunnocks please, Yog.

  2. Along with this and ‘Blessed Are For The Sick’ this is truly a classic! I can’t still fathom the new Morbid Angel album…just like….what the hell….:(

    1. Haha I know! I’ve no idea what they were thinking with their comeback album… but I do actually quite enjoy it on occasion. There’s something gloriously silly about it! But it’s not a patch on this stuff for sure.

      1. There are some good traditional death metal songs on that album, like ‘Nevermore’ and stuff like that. It’s definitely something to pull out and make people lose their minds to, not in the good way.

By the way, thanks for the follow. I found your blog through LeBrain!

      2. That’s true, I really liked “Nevermore” and “Blades for Baal”. I passed on the remixes album though!

It’s a pleasure! I’m looking forward to reading through your posts. Thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate it.

      3. Same here, at like 15 for it when it’s just a carbon copy of the album with some unknown DJ putting his spin on it. I’ll pass, thanks!

        You’re welcome!
