How Tempting! – December 2013

So it’s time for the last How Tempting post of 2013 and the final month of the HMO Challenge. I’ve got a £45 budget to aim for this month and, to be honest, most of that budget has already been spent! I found out about a few exciting new albums that slipped under my radar earlier in the year, not appearing in any of my previous How Tempting posts. Just for a change, I’d like to preserve a bit of mystery so I’ll leave you to guess what these might be before revealing them in my final Buying Round-Up of the year later in December.

Outside of these catch-up purchases things are pretty slim on the new release front. There are only a handful of December releases that are likely to tempt me. There’s the “Full Dynamic Range” vinyl reissue of Entombed’s Clandestine. If you remember, I bought the FDR vinyl edition of Entombed’s debut LP Left Hand Path earlier in the year so, although I haven’t listened to that as much as I would have liked, I am keen to buy the follow-up even if it’s not a massive priority.

Deep Purple’s Now What?!, originally released back in May 2013, is given a couple of silly-season reissues in December. There’s the reasonably-priced “Gold Edition” with a couple of bonus studio tracks and a live disc. And there is a Box Set too, which adds about £20 to the price tag and throws in three singles, a T-Shirt and some other knick-knacks. The album has been received well so I ought to want one of these… but I’m not really sure I do.

We also have The Almighty’s Blood, Fire and Love and Live, a cumbersomely-titled repackaging of their Blood, Fire and Love and Blood, Fire and Live albums. See what they did there? Anyway, I was never a huge fan but I did have a few albums back in the day and could be convinced to check this out. I’d probably wait for the price to drop a bit though.

Last, but not least, is the reissue of The Obsessed’s The Church Within. This highly-regarded Doom album has been out of print for some time and will be a must-buy for me within the next couple of months. I’m a big fan of the Doom genre and my appreciation always reaches a peak in the winter months!

So until next time, I hope you all get your hands on some exciting music this month. Please let me know if you think there are any crucial 2013 albums that I might have missed. And if I don’t manage another post before then, I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!

  1. Odd, to me, that pickings are so slim what with Christmas on the horizon… then again, given some more thought probably not. Can’t imagine most of these bands of which you write give a toss about Christmas…

Entombed! Yes! As for Purple, I say go big or go home, That’s the kind of thing that will only increase in value, rarity, etc. Get the box, I say. The Obsessed would be cool too. I say GIVE ‘ER!

[Aside]: I wonder it the Almighty ever toured with Party Canon?

And a Happy Holidays to you, our almighty HMO. May whatever version of Santa is currently stalking from the shadows see fit to shower your HQ with heavy metal goodness. \m/ \m/

    1. I think that most things, even if they are meant for Christmas buying, tend to be released late November at the latest. The busiest time when I worked in retail was the November payday weekend. Anything released in December tends to just get lost in the chaos too so, like you say, the kind of bands I like are better off avoiding releasing stuff at this time of the year.

I kind of agree with Purple but trading up for the box only gets you about 6 extra songs for your extra £20. I can live without all the bumff like the T-Shirt etc… not all that concerned with resale value and all that.

Don’t think The Almighty and Party Cannon have crossed paths, more’s the pity, but I did see The Almighty supporting Maiden once!

Happy holidays! Hope Satan is good to you too! \m/

    1. Yes I think they were Glasgow based but the singer was Irish wasn’t he? I first saw them on the James Whale show oddly enough! I seem to remember it was some awful HM special and they did a song with Devil in the title… Devil’s Toy maybe? I thought they were good the one time I saw them (touring the Powertrippin’ album)

  2. I’m most intrigued by The Church Within this month. I’ve got it in mp3s digitized from a vinyl and passed to me by a friend some years back, but I’ve always suspected the sound wasn’t as good as it should be. Will be interested to hear what you think of the reissue.

As for Now What!?, know you’ve been unsure about its “necessity” for a while, but I do personally think it’s a high quality offering from the Purple ones. I’ve gone from it to Bananas quite a bit lately and find the two albums have a lot in common to my ears, and I’m liking both. On the other hand, whether you buy it now or some time from now, it does seem to me to be one that you’ll eventually view as an “ought to own,” so I won’t press too hard at this point.

    1. Actually Bananas was one I didn’t like much so that’s interesting! I’ve liked a few of the Morse albums though and… I don’t know. It’s just not the mood I’m in these days and I don’t see the album becoming unavailable anytime soon. I daresay I’ll want it at some point though (even if I end up a few tracks short).

I’ve never heard The Church Within at all so I’m looking forward to getting that one. I’ll keep you posted!
