The Enslaved and Melechesh sound great. I mean, Israeli metal! Yeah!!
That Purple is right up your (and Mike’s) alley. Right on. Gillan too! Woo! Damn, I got to give it to the Purple People, they sure do bombard you fans with product!
Defenders of the Faith. I was laughing about that one (I think on Mike’s site). Here it’s the 30th anniversary and I’ve never heard the damn thing! I am RIGHT on top of things, eh? 🙂
Sleep! Henry Rollins introduced me to them, on his radio show. Cool that they’ve re-released it – I could never find a copy in the shops! I always figured it was one of those ones the fans never turn in, just keep them forever. Now I may have a chance at one – do you know if it’ll be on CD too, or just the vinyl?
I know there’s excitement about the VH… and a little derision already about DLR sounding a bit tired… but it’s still VH and it’ll still be mighty damn fine, I’d wager. Better than I could do, anyway.
Ooooo I hope you get to buy ALL of this goodness! Good luck!
Just the vinyl being reissued with the Sleep album I think. The CD is still in print and pretty cheap though (in the UK at least). If I get the LP you can have my CD copy!
Yeah, DLR struggles with singing his older stuff now. I think he’ll sound better when he does their newer stuff but I just can’t be bothered with the live VH for some reason.
I think DLR needs to take Robert Plant as an example – just accept that the voice is changing and change the key of the song to suit. It still totally works for Plant, it would for DLR too.
You might be wisest to hold off on that VH live… the way releases go these days, they’ll put it out, wait two months, then there’ll be a special edition or Japanese (VERY EXPENSIVE) edition with exclusive tracks. Let’s soak the people!
Mmmm I’ll bet that Sleep vinyl will be awesome. I looked at it on Discogs, looks like there’ll even be different colours and spatters and… beautiful. Haha that wasn’t what I was going for, on the CD question! Of course the AAAA always accepts unwanted orphans but I totally meant that whenever I looked up the record on our Amazon, what I saw was prices like this:
I’ve honestly not heard enough of DLR’s live singing to comment. I heard that song he did with Grohl and thought he was alright. I’d be surprised if VH weren’t already tuning down to accommodate him though.
Weird that the Sleep CD is so pricey there. It goes for about £5-6 here new.
I will get Priest for sure HALEN the live album for sure…Roth vocally on a bad day(which for all Reviews is every day is a bad day for Roths singing) is better than Deke on a good day! Too bad Halen didn’t do SUMTHIN like Priest does man…..💀
I’m just not in the mood for the VH, it’s actually not anything to do with DLR’s vocals. I don’t mind that. The personality in his voice is still there. It is too bad they didn’t do a Priest/Purple though!
Good point! I’m pretty surprised they’re bringing out a live album at all. I suppose it’ll buy them some time to get their act together for another studio release.
Aw damn Deke, you’ve shattered my image of you being like the guy in Rock Star, just jumping up on stage and letting ‘er rip while the current singer sneaks out the back door, leaving the band in your capable hands… fame and fortune await, Deke!

Priest – a must. Absolutely a must. I can only hope they do Turbo as well to complete the trifecta.
Purple – also a must, but can wait since I have 1,354 Purple CDs on deck to review.
Van Halen – a must. I too am disappointed in Dave’s vocals on the preview tracks. Craig saw these guys in Taranna and is baffled why they would have picked Tokyo to release. He says Dave was in mych better shape vocally in Taranna.
And no interest at all in the VH remasters, unless they blow the doors off packaging-wise.
Pricey month for you then! The details of the VH remasters are still a bit sketchy. Doesn’t seem to be any bonuses and I saw a picture of the box with the remasters and live album together. It didn’t look all that fancy.
I wonder if they’d do Turbo?! Interesting…
And I wanted to ask if you had heard that Purple show? Wasn’t sure if it had been released before.
A Purple show with only four tracks. It’s not ringing any bells. 1971…hmm.
I did a quick check and I didn’t see anything like that in my collection.
As for Turbo, gosh I sure hope so. Put on all the unreleased tracks from that period and a bunch of live stuff from the Live in Texas video, and wham bam thank you ma’am. There’s a deluxe right there!
That was just three tracks with Stock Aitken and Waterman. One track was “You are Everything” by the Stylistics, as revealed in a Priest interview in a 1987 issue of Guitar for the Practicing Musician!
I’m not aware of that Long Beach show, at least searching my memory, I’m not. 71…that would be Fireball period no?
Ah, I’d misremembered it as being an album. Still… 3 songs is probably 3 too many haha.
Not sure exactly. I’m going to guess just before Fireball. It’s got Strange Kind of Woman on it along with Speed King, Child in Time and Mandrake Root.
And Strange Kind was a pre-album single. So that probably nails the time frame. I am 100% sure I have nothing like that already in my collection. Chances are it has never been released officially before then.
I have two best-ofs from that period and some singles too! One of the best-ofs is a 2 CD set and it’s just packed. Considering it’s a best of from a period with two albums, you can imagine.
It’s a weird thing called Clear Air Turbulence, with 31 tracks total. T-Rev found it for me, in Detroit I think? He lives right across the river from Detroit so he’s there fairly regularly.

I see. I have some Gillan reissues that I think are from Purple Records…remasters with extensive liner notes. But I am not as keen to collect all of Ian’s work as I am to collect, say, all the Rainbows.
Speaking of which, I think I’m behind on my Rainbow collection too.
Fair enough. I think I’m maybe more in the Gillan camp. I loved the Gillan albums with Torme especially. But I wouldn’t say I was a completist by any means.
Allow me to clarify a tad — the Gillan albums, I want ’em all. The IGB and other solo stuff, not so much. Dreamcatcher etc. I don’t need.
Gillan however was a really great band. I have some CDs from (I would say) about 1990-ish that are loaded with bonus tracks. I love the album he did with Janick too.
Yes, I’d say I’m pretty much the same. I’ve got good editions of Mr Universe through to Magic. All with bonus tracks, liner notes etc… Got 2 live BBC albums that are PHENOMENAL, a cool live box set with tons of stuff and then the Naked Thunder/Toolbox albums that I’ve been so obsessed with lately!
Can you see my burnin’ eyes? Can you feel my gut reaction.
FACT: I was playing the song Hang Me Out to Dry in-store. Aaron walked in at the exact moment Ian Gillan let out his opening scream, and Aaron started laughing aloud and asked me who it was!
Not much to add to the commentary, I’m afraid. Though the ’71 DP sounds quite tasty. I still enjoy Mr Lord’s keyboard work and Mandrake Root has plenty of that.
Good hunting!
I LOVE Enslaved and I’m over the moon re their new album. Still a few days before it gets here but hey! Melechesh, you say? Sounds good…let me check them out…why wait any longer…
Oh yes I will – will pop onto youtube a bit later on and check them out – with people around during the day its not always the best time to check out new bands, hahaha!(maybe if I do they’ll move me into the basement? Works for me) Although I must say, I am intrigued! Re Enslaved – they are one of the bands I have to buy their CDs or the world will come to an end. CD ordered and on its way 🙂 From what I understand the album is def worth it…as if they could get any better! Watch this space!
Story of my life: I popped onto youtube and checked out Melechesh – I quite enjoyed it but before I knew what hit me I was off listening to Arafel and Imperial Circus Dead Decadence.
For once, just once, I wish I could focus on the band at hand and NOT get carried away! I’ll try Melechesh again over the weekend…this time wearing blinkers!
I’m afraid to end end with “watch this space” unless your ready to do some digging!
I’ve not heard of either of those bands. Should I be checking them out? It’s so easy to get sidelined when your listening to stuff online though. I find I dismiss things too easily.
Nah, I don’t think so…Arafel is a bit too melodic – the kind of music that makes you want stick pencils in your ears…
Imperial Circus Dead Decadence …er…words cannot describe this …it’s strange and it makes me think of black metal easter bunnies…angry ones!
I think I need some real black metal now…I’ve been fortunate enough to find a stash of Meads of Asphodel albums…someone bought it and hated it! My good fortune indeed!
With a pissed of ferret trying to nip their toes! happy days!!!
which ones? Damascus Steel
In the Name of God…welcome to planet Genocide
The Murder of Jesus the Jew
Looks like they bought the newer releases…don’t people check out stuff before they buy it? Hey not that I mind. by all means buy it and resell cheap cheap!
Yeah! And we can benefit from their stupidity! I’ve not heard any of those. You should track down their Jihad EP. It’s a split and had got 2 Mayhem tracks with Dead on vocals. It’s fantastic.
Only three: Jihad, Early Years (demo stuff mostly) and Exhuming the Grave of Yeshua. I think those are all quite early stuff of theirs. Quite a strange band!
JIHAD is awesome! Been spening more time with that on youtube than the other albums…something about it, can’t quite put my finger on it
Re Melechesh, I like what I’ve heard so far.
No Enslaved update yet, but I am still loving Battle Beast and Sabaton – see the bigger picture without the aviator sunnies lol!
There is something about MEADS – I can’t quite put my finger on it…
It’s a pity but I know what you mean – the look can be quite off-putting. Guess I feel the same way about some other bands – tend not to even give them a go for whatever visual reason, lol
Discovered any new bands lately? As if I don’t have enough on my plate already!
Not a huge power metal fan. Alestorm – Dundee’s finest! There is another Alestorm-related band called Gloryhammer, if you’re interested? I’ve never heard them but their last album was called “The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee” which sounds… umm… different?
Yes thanks I came across Gloryhammer this afternoon. Wahahaha! Briliiant title! I appreciate titles like that.
If you are interested there is a South African band called “Zombies ate my girlfriend” it’s a bit too death-metally for my liking but who knows, maybe you like it? https://www.facebook.com/Zombiesgirlfriend
Got sidetracked and drawn into so many other black metal bands…let’s face it when BM sucks it sucks big fat hairy armpits! Some of them are really really baaaad and coming from me…they must be the worst ever – I’m generally very relaxed when it comes to music. PS I gave the Japanese band (Imperial Circus Dead Decadence) another go – on some weird level the satanic easter bunnies are growing on me…
I’m actually pretty intrigued by both Enslaved and Melechesh. They sound mighty good.
… also, Judas Priest has been up there on my playlist recently. Screaming for Vengeance is the favourite, but Defenders of the Faith is a good ‘un, too.
The Sleep one sounds good, I love those guys. Are you not a Dopesmoker fan then? I don’t think I own anything much heavier – it was the first LP I ever put a piece of Lego on too, giving me the idea for all my nonsense.
I’ve not heard Dopesmoker. Been tempted to pick up a copy but because I was never that into Holy Mountain I keep holding back. I did hear an earlier album of theirs once too and wasn’t fussed. But I really liked the new song they brought out last year so I might feel different now. I remember seeing your review of it but I didn’t realise how important it was in your legend!
Once again that’s not what your resume says. It says you’re an expert in things stronger than coffee and once drank Richard Hammond under a table (which wasn’t hard since he was shorter than the table). I’m just telling you what it says!
Had a wee sneak listen. It sounds more up my street than the Sabs-imitation on Holy Mountain. I read a review of Dopesmoker (when it was released as Jerusalem) that described it as “the sound of two elephants shagging each other up the arse” and… yes. Yes it does.
I bought the new ENSLAVED ‘In Times’ and it is once again, an excellent offering, (just as you predicted). I refuse to buy the new ‘Live’ Van Halen and will pass on the ‘Defenders Of The Faith’ deluxe reissue. Heck, it costs 25 U.S. dollars and the 2 live CD’s is all I want! I chuckle cuz I am with you on the SLEEP situation.
I also picked up Motor Sister ‘Ride’ (Scott Ian’s side project/supergroup) John Tempesta on drums and it ROCKS!! It’s on Metal Blade. Rock Steady, Metal Buddy! \m/\m/
I just alerted Keepsmealive to that Motor Sister album actually! Still not heard it myself though, but I thought it might be his kind of thing.
I saw Priest for £13 which isn’t bad value to be honest. But I think I’d just rather get something new. What’s putting you off the VH Stone? I wasn’t that impressed with the version of Panama from it.
It’s that I would rather see Van Halen release another studio album and not decide to rest on their laurels with a live album. Many of our favorite bands do release live albums, only these same bands release studio albums consistently over the years… do I sound crazy? If I was part of Van Halen’s management team, I would have suggested at least an EP of new studio material to be packaged with the live material… that would have been more enticing for me.
Plus the album cover art for the live Van Halen is AWFUL!! LOL!! You ROCK \m/\m/
Great point. I would prefer them to have gone back in with more new stuff. I suppose Dave Lee Roth never did a live album with Van Halen though did he so there’s that. I just wish he’d done it then rather than now!
And the cover is pretty bad. Actually, most VH covers have been pretty bad don’t you think? Quite liked Fair Warning, that was a cool one.
I have, it seems like those are both safe bets (still not bought either though)
Good point about the Priest. I’m pretty happy with the copy I’ve got so the remastering seems a bit pointless to me. But I saw it for just £13 in HMV so that’s still pretty good value even if you just want the two live discs. But I’m a bit on the fence too.
Hooray for new HMO content!!
The Enslaved and Melechesh sound great. I mean, Israeli metal! Yeah!!

Good find! I love what I’ve heard of them. Only got a few albums of theirs though. Keep meaning to get more. What albums did you get?
Angry Black Metal Easter Bunnies does sound strangely intriguing though…

In the Name of God…welcome to planet Genocide
The Murder of Jesus the Jew
Looks like they bought the newer releases…don’t people check out stuff before they buy it? Hey not that I mind. by all means buy it and resell cheap cheap!

Yeah! And we can benefit from their stupidity! I’ve not heard any of those. You should track down their Jihad EP. It’s a split and had got 2 Mayhem tracks with Dead on vocals. It’s fantastic.

Jihad you say? Will do! Oh yes, hail their stupidity!!!

Yes, it’s got studio/demo versions of Freezing Moon and Carnage. Brilliant. And the Meads EP is great as well.

which albums of their do you have?

Only three: Jihad, Early Years (demo stuff mostly) and Exhuming the Grave of Yeshua. I think those are all quite early stuff of theirs. Quite a strange band!

The stranger the better, lol. If I find any other stuff I’ll let you know.

Brilliant! I’m glad you like Jihad… I was worried I might be on my own there…
I dunno. I find it hard to see past the aviator sunnies.

There’s definitely something about the Meads… when I first bought Jihad I just couldn’t stop listening to it. I was obsessed!
I’ve actually not discovered any new bands this year so far. I’ve been trying to spend more time with all the stuff I’ve got piling up everywhere!

do you like lots of power metal? another genre I enjoy…busy with Alestorm right now…pirate metal…need someone to walk the plank…

Melechesh = Nileistic?

Thanks. I knew there was a correct term for it but all I could think of was Nilemongous, which didn’t seem right somehow.

I’m actually pretty intrigued by both Enslaved and Melechesh. They sound mighty good.
… also, Judas Priest has been up there on my playlist recently. Screaming for Vengeance is the favourite, but Defenders of the Faith is a good ‘un, too.

I’m with you on that. Both excellent but Screaming edges it for me too.

It will be a pivotal moment in the eventual Hollywood biopic of me.
I’d recommend it unreservedly, it’s relentless. Great cover art too. And I don’t do anything stronger than coffee.

The new Melechesh and Enslaved are fantastic, as you’ve probably seen me raving about those two albums.
I’m a bit on the fence about the new Judas Priest reissue. I love the original and I’m worried that the remaster will make it sound ‘bad’.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I have, it seems like those are both safe bets (still not bought either though)
Good point about the Priest. I’m pretty happy with the copy I’ve got so the remastering seems a bit pointless to me. But I saw it for just £13 in HMV so that’s still pretty good value even if you just want the two live discs. But I’m a bit on the fence too.
