“Oooohhhh… c’mon now”
Can you feel the groove? Doom metal doesn’t have to be heads-down misery all the time so Cathedral dial in some fun on the wonderful Midnight Mountain. Cathedral started their career by ploughing a miserable, glacial-paced furrow but they weren’t the kind of band to let themselves get pigeonholed for long. Their heroes like Sabbath and Pentagram had room for some swagger and boogie so Cathedral did too. Midnight Mountain‘s snake-hipped rhythm, hand claps and Lee Dorrian’s funky exhortations just never get old. And if that sounds a bit too disco for your liking, don’t forget it’s also thunderingly heavy. Check out the quaking riff four minutes into the song. Can you feel your bowels move?
Good stoner metal.

Haha, liar! you said ‘Doom metal doesn’t have to be heads-down misery all the time’
I’d never heard this before and it is superb. Reckon I could dance to it, if it came as a bright pink 12″ single.

I thought you’d know this one! Go to the back of the class. You should look for the promo video on YouTube. I think it will be up your street.

What LP is this from?

It’s from ‘Link and Brown: the Sausage Chronicles’
Sorry, lying again! It’s from ‘The Ethereal Mirror’. Their second album. You want it because of the cover.

I read the 4-minute warning, and was thus safely seated when I heard the potentially unsettling riff – good news is, my body’s reaction was uneventful. Better news, solid riff!

Awww… I’ll try harder in future.

Nothing better than a good bowel movement. Especially as I get older, but that is another story for another time. 😂

I never owned any Cathedral but I knew of em because my cousin was into doom, death, thrash, progressive and metal. This track is more NWOBHM for me.
Enjoyed the 4m riff

But the riffs and the solo are very Sabbath to me. There’s definitely NWOBHM in there. The only pure doom record they did was their first. They were quite varied.

What album should I start with?

This one, The Ethereal Mirror, is probably best. Carnival Bizarre is a good one to start with too. There was a great comp called The Serpent’s Gold as well.

And when I say ‘pure doom’ I just mean that it was all slow and miserable. Not necessarily better… the first album is good but it’s tough going.

First album was called ‘Forest Of Equilibrium’.
