R.I.P. “Fast” Eddie Clarke (1950 – 2018)

Total dude. Got a Saxon T-Shirt on as well… clearly a man of taste!

It’s already been a tough week in metal, with the passing of both Chris Tsangarides and Iron Man’s Alfred Morris III, but now I’m sad to report that Motörhead/Fastway guitar hero “Fast” Eddie Clarke has passed away aged 67 following a battle with pneumonia.

Clarke was the last surviving member of the classic Motörhead lineup that released indispensable and influential albums like Overkill and Ace Of Spades. Lemmy, Philthy Animal and Fast Eddie might have had No Class but Eddie always rode the band’s wild rhythmic maelstrom with style and taste: dishing out bluesy double-stops and windswept unison bends that lifted the din to another level of excitement.

Sad to think all three members of this legendary lineup are gone but at least the three amigos are now back together doing what they do best. Playing filthy, loud rock n’ roll.

Malcolm Young (1953 – 2017)

HMO salutes Malcolm Young, AC/DC’s legendary rhythm guitarist, who has passed away aged 64. As the driving force behind the band’s unmistakable sound and phenomenally successful career, it’s impossible to over-estimate the importance and influence of his work. A huge loss.

Lady Death – New Tribulation EP To Be Released In Dec 2017

A double-whammy of release news from the excellent Swedish band Tribulation. January 26th 2018 will see the release of a new full-length album entitled Down Below. And, if you just can’t wait that long for new Tribulation music, then they will be releasing a brand new 7” EP on December 22nd 2017 called Lady Death.

The EP, their first release with new drummer Oscar Leander, will include album track Lady Death and also a B-Side track called Skärselden. The artwork is also from Tribulation’s guitarist Jonathan Hultén and is pretty nifty. You can pre-order the usual rainbow varieties of vinyl colours from the label website here or the band’s own merch site here.

The band’s last album The Children Of The Night was one of the better, more durable releases of recent years so it’s exciting to have the band back. My only question is… I’ve seen a few bands do this recently… since when did one A-Side track and one B-Side track constitute an EP? Answers in the comments please.

Thunderbolt – Saxon Announce New Album For 2018

Saxon studio album No. 22 is on its way. The HMO favourites have announced that their new release will be called Thunderbolt and is due out on February 2nd 2018 via their Militia Guard label. The follow-up to 2015’s excellent Battering Ram has been produced once more by Andy Sneap and features original artwork by long time Saxon artist Paul Raymond Gregory.

Some tour dates have also been announced in the UK and Europe but don’t fret if your nearest venue isn’t listed as the band promise a lot more dates to follow in 2018.

The album will be available in the usual variety of versions including a digipack CD with a bonus track “raw” version of the track Nosferatu (The Vampires Waltz). And there will also be the now-obligatory deluxe box set version but I don’t know what’s in that as yet. I do know that the vinyl edition will not include the bonus track. Pre-orders will be available from 1st Dec 2017.

Thunderbolt Tracklisting:

Olympus Rising/Thunderbolt/The Secret Of Flight/Nosferatu (The Vampires Waltz)/They Played Rock And Roll/Predator/Sons Of Odin/Sniper/A Wizard’s Tale/Speed Merchants/Roadie’s Song

Kingdoms Disdained – Morbid Angel’s New Album Due 1st Dec 2017

Some surprise release news towards the end of the week there, with a big announcement from death metal veterans Morbid Angel. Their new album Kingdoms Disdained is due out on 1st December 2017 and the band has also unveiled the cover art and a new track Piles of Little Arms.

Kingdoms Disdained follows on from the band’s last album, the disastrous (if oddly-enjoyable) Illud Divinum Insanus* and the eventual dissolution of that album’s line-up. Now, joining the mercurial and ever-present Trey Azagthoth, we have returning bassist/vocalist Steve Tucker and new members Scott Fuller and Dan Vadim Von on drums and guitar respectively. And, strengthening the link to the band’s past, ex-guitarist Erik Rutan has taken on production duties too.

Given the controversy surrounding the previous album, this upcoming effort is already being subjected to a ton of scrutiny. Many aren’t happy with the artwork. I think it’s a bit too similar to the artwork for The Grey Eminence, the most recent album from Steve Tucker’s other band Warfather. I’d be more excited if they had come up with something a bit more unique but I don’t mind it and, until I’ve seen it on a physical edition, I’ll reserve judgement. The latest track Piles of Little Arms is also OK, if not particularly remarkable. What do you reckon? 2017 has been a banner year for death metal. Do Morbid Angel still have what it takes to lead the pack in such a competitive climate or are they set to become also-rans?

We’ll find out for sure on December 1st.

(Thanks to Nick Green for the heads-up about this!)

*This leap from “I” to “K” means that the 2015 RSD release Juvenilia has been counted as part of the official Morbid Angel A-Z canon.

The Obsessed Announce New Reissue of S/T Debut

Some exciting reissue news courtesy of Relapse Records. The self-titled debut album from doom legends The Obsessed is set for a remastered re-release on November 17th 2017. It was originally released in 1990 and, despite occasional reissues here and there, has been out-of-print for years.

It’s a big gap in my collection and one of those albums that I periodically consider shelling out for online. So this reissue is hugely welcome and a must-buy for me. And, as if the album reissue wasn’t good enough on its own, it will also come with previously unreleased bonus tracks, including a live set as well as the highly sought-after Concrete Cancer demo. It will also feature expanded artwork, never-before-seen photos, and extended liner notes from frontman Scott “Wino” Weinrich.

The classic band recently returned with their fantastic new album Sacred and this reissue just seals the deal on an excellent year for fans of Wino and doom metal.

The Obsessed will be available on 2CD, LP, 2LP, and digital formats via Relapse Records. Physical bundles and digital pre-orders are available via Relapse Records here and streaming services at this location.
