How Tempting: Iron Maiden and My Dying Bride

Feel the length!
Feel the length!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or just flat-out hate Heavy Metal, you’ll know Iron Maiden have announced the release of their new album! Book of Souls, due out 4th Sep 2015, is going to be Maiden’s first double album: with 11 tracks and a running time of 92 minutes. Plenty of length there but I’m sure they’ll know what to do with it too. I’m a big fan of the recent Maiden albums (and you should be too) so I’m well up for this (and you should be too). Good to see them pushing the boat out with the long songs and double album and even better to see Bruce Dickinson back in the fray after his recent cancer treatment. Nothing much to add to this release other than “can’t wait”. It’s an exciting time indeed for Maiden fans!

Feel the misery!
Feel the misery!

But all those of you that prefer their music darker and more miserable can find plenty to smile about this year too. Paradise Lost have just spoiled you all rotten with their inspired The Plague Within and now their fellow ‘Peaceville Three’ band, My Dying Bride, are set to return with their new album Feel The Misery. It’s due out on the 18th Sep 2015 and coincides with the band’s 25th Anniversary and the return of their original guitarist Calvin Robertshaw. My Dying Bride’s latter-day releases have been very good so it’ll be interesting to hear what difference Calvin’s return will make to their music. The band has this to say about it:

The crushing of hearts and the solemn farewells to friends and lovers twinned with the destruction of flesh and the passions of cruelty are laid neatly for the listener to devour and savour. Eight new compositions detailing the path of life through dark doors and the burdens we all must endure simply to make it to the end…”

Reading that, I’m a bit disappointed this isn’t coming out until Autumn. Sounds like it would make for great summer listening. Perfect background music for a summer party or BBQ! Would you like some crushed hearts and solemn farewells to devour and savour with your beefburger? Oh, yes please.

With these two essential releases, it looks like September is already shaping up to be a big month in 2015’s Metal calendar.
