“Before they bring the curtain down”
I’ve listened to Badge a gazillion times now and it’s never lost an ounce of its power. It’s the track that got me into Cream, or to be more precise, its the bridge that got me into Cream. The main song is wonderfully summery but when it reaches the bridge and Eric Clapton’s Leslie-speaker guitar arpeggios chime in, it’s one of the most emotionally moreish sounds in rock history. It was co-written by Clapton and his Beatle pal George Harrison for Cream’s farewell album Goodbye and although the relationships in Cream had turned sour by that point, the band put in a great performance. Especially Jack Bruce, who excels with his bouncy, melodic bass line. Shame they couldn’t have held the band together as this is brilliant stuff and I find their catalogue, short though it is, increasingly revealing and rewarding over the years. But Badge still ranks as the cream of the crop.
Agree with this totally. My very favorite Cream song, meaningless lyrics and all. The version they played during the 2005 reunion at the Royal Albert Hall is smokin’ too, sometimes I even like it best; you lose the piano but I like Clapton’s singing without the double tracking and background vocals.

I’ve not heard that one. I’ll check that out. I recently got a live Clapton disc from 74 that has a great version too.

I hadn’t heard this one in ages, thanks for bringing it back.

Agree totally too. This song just does some really unorthodox things.

And in less than 3mins too! That’s kinda unheard of these days…

I need to play my Cream compilation again. I just…I dunno man. It never grabs me for coming back again and again.

Fair enough, it’s taken them years to grow on me. I had a comp for a while and that never grabbed me much either.

Should I skip the comp and grab an album?

Maybe. That worked for me anyway.

Cream is a band I know the hits, but don’t know the music…if that makes sense. I need to dive in to them one day.

Makes total sense. They don’t have many albums either so not much diving required! There’s a 4cd set called Those Were The Days that’s great if it’s still available. Has most their stuff in one place.

That would be the way to go. Thanks…I’ll look for that one.

In my dreams, I can play like Cream. Then I wake up.

Did one of my last takes on this cut. So much goodness in this one. Eric rips a great short solo. A fave.

Cream’s best is very creamy indeed. This sure is one of them.

It definitely is. I’m way more into Cream now than I used to be. I’ve even started digging into Clapton solo a little bit too.
